A Story of Deserts and Skeletons

Almost unprotected against sun or storm, (the Bushmen) struggle for survival on the barren plains in much the same way as the animals around them, they were able to feel an affinity with all creation. In their minds the spirit of Man and that of the lesser creatures were curiously intermingled
The Bushman’s Dream, Jenny Seed, 1974

Namibia is a true desert. It is the oldest desert on Earth, and unbelievably, only Antarctica is drier. It is a land where young kids of 7 have never seen rain! Yet in this incredible living desert, desert-adapted wildlife abounds, and the vistas are so far and the air so clear, that one can often see 50km or more away!

A massive country the size of France, distances are great yet the infrastructure is very much first world. It is one of the most politically stable, yet newest of African nations, having achieved its independence from South Africa early in 1991.

The world’s tallest dunes are to be found and explored at Sossusvlei, an extraordinary example of colonial German architecture is found at Swakopmund, where offshore, one of the World’s rarest dolphins, the Heaviside’s is able to be spotted. Possibly the most incredible part of the country is found in the northern Damara and Kaokaland.

African Wild Dog (Lycaon pictus)

A Wild dog ghosts through the sunset. Once widely spread, these fascinating predators were once ruthless hunted by farmers. Still highly endangered they do seem to be making a return thanks in no small part to a change in public perception and community based tourism initiatives.

Battle of the scavengers

Death brings life in the Desert and there is no more fiercely contested location then a carcass. Here Jackals and Vultures battle over the remains in a dramatic confrontation.

Gemsbok (Oryx gazella)

A lone Gemsbok wanders across an endless vista. Seemingly devoid of life, the desert actually boasts a phenomenal array of species, all extremely specialized for arid environments.

Elephant (Loxodonta)

A Lone young elephant silhouetted in the early dawn. Namibian elephants exist in areas previously thought to be completely unsuitable. These masters of desert survival can locate water many feet below ground with receptors in their trunks. Elephant created drinking holes are a vital part of desert ecology.

Lion cub

A cub looks for its mother in a pride at Etosha, An oasis in this Arid land.

Cheetah's play fighting (Acinonyx jubatus)

An unusually large group of four Cheetah cubs battle for dominance in play turned to fighting. Many Cheetahs are lost due to injuries sustained in these battles as any damage to their ability to run is tantamount to a death sentence in the desert.

Only the lonely

The loser wanders off to an uncertain future. Recent initiatives with farmers throughout Namibia have seen conservation efforts for these magnificent predators bring some great results.

Skeleton Coast

A single whale vertebrae lies along the aptly named Skeleton Coast. Many men and animals have perished along this, one of the most inhospitable stretches of coastline on the planet.
